Mid-cycle updates rarely extend to foundations, but the updated Q70 (that’s the old M sedan for those who aren’t fluent in Infiniti-speak) is an exception. Infiniti unveiled two versions of its top-of-the-line sedan at this week’s New York auto show: one with the same dimensions as the 2014 model, another—the Q70L—significantly stretched.

Designed to appeal to the executive carriage trade, the L version adds 5.9 inches to the Q70’s wheelbase (from 114.2 to 120.1) and 7.3 inches to overall length (from 194.7 to 202). Height, width, and track are the same for both models. Infiniti’s design team has put most of the added length to work in the L’s rear seat, where legroom stretches by 5.6 inches (36.2 to 41.8) and knee room swells by 5.9 inches (26.6 to 32.5).

Aside from asserting that the dimensional increase “greatly augments the athletic presence” of the car, Infiniti makes no mention of what effect, if any, the longer wheelbase has on structural rigidity or curb weight.

Other elements of the freshening, common to both versions, include a revised front end (new LED headlights, a new grille with a mesh finish and chrome surround, and a new front bumper with integrated fog lamps); a character line flowing from the grille to the LED taillights; a flattened deck lid; and slimmer rear bumper. Infiniti cites impressive aero numbers for the restyled Q70s, with coefficient of drag ratings ranging from 0.26 to 0.28, depending on equipment.

The Q70’s interior continues to be a handsome arrangement of high-quality materials, wood trim, orchestral audio systems, contemporary telematics (Infiniti Connection services, including a concierge feature), and enough premium leather to upholster a British clubroom. The long-wheelbase model includes heated rear seats, reading lights, a 12-volt power outlet, and auto-closing rear doors. Infiniti claims reduced interior noise levels for both cars, which is achieved by adding more sound-deadening material, improving sealing, and using active noise cancellation.

The refreshed Q70’s powertrains carry over from last year’s model: a 3.7-liter V-6 (330 horsepower, 270 lb-ft of torque) as standard, and a 5.6-liter V-8 (420 horses, 417 lb-ft) available as an option. Infiniti’s hybrid (a 302-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 paired with a 67-hp electric motor) system continues, but is available only on standard-wheelbase models.

All power sources are mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is available with both the standard and long-wheelbase versions. The 2015 models retain Infiniti’s Drive Mode Selector, with four settings: standard, eco, sport, and snow.
