This weekend is your last chance to catch a glimpse of the historic eye candy on display at Canada's flagship auto show in Toronto

TORONTO -  Today’s automotive companies have seemingly endless ways to present their latest models to the public, from television and radio to the internet and social media. It wasn’t always so. Purveyors of early automobiles, from the turn of last century onward, relied mainly on highly stylized print advertising to launch their new vehicles, and the creation of these ads was an art form unto itself. Art and the Automobile – which debuted last year at the Canadian International AutoShow (CIAS) – returns for the second time this year with a new theme, matching 60 years of classic automobiles with their original advertising, in an elegant display.
Presented by the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Canada’s premiere classic car show, this year’s Art and the Automobile display features 17 vehicles ranging from a 1904 Oldsmobile Model T “French Front” to a 1963 Studebaker Avanti.
“Our owners have gone to a lot of trouble to get these beautiful vehicles here for us to see,” said Cobble Beach Chairman Rob McLeese. “We have people here from Colorado, Roger Willbanks and the Duesenberg; we have Vern Smith and the Auburn Boat-tail Speedster, from Newfoundland; Peter Boyle’s Isotta Fraschini and the Steyr, from Pennsylvania – and we have a myriad of lovely Ontario cars.”

The backdrop for each vehicle is the period-correct piece of advertising that introduced it when new – from intaglio etched prints through hand-coloured renderings to artfully lit photographic compositions, and each with a hand-chosen typeface heading suitable for its era. Most of the vehicle displays also include a vintage fuel pump appropriate for its timeframe.

Most of the cars featured are exceptional for either their rarity, or for being landmark examples of pioneering technology. They include the 1929 Cord L-29, the very first front-wheel driven American-built car; the 1908 McLaughlin-Buick, which launched General Motors of Canada; the very first car produced by Chrysler – and, the Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A SS, one of only two ever built.
The exhibit is an extremely effective way to showcase the ongoing relationship between the automobile – and the art of marketing it.
Located on the 700 level, South Building, of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, the show continues until February 21st, and is a must-see for fans of art and automobiles alike.
